Introduction:
The Pinellas Park Medical District (PPMD) is a group of medical and medically related business established to promote business development, an interprofessional referral network system, community healthcare awareness, student enrollment opportunities in healthcare education, and to foster employment opportunities for those students graduating in healthcare fields with leading edge skills and knowledge. The mission of the PPMD is to promote and strengthen healthcare and related businesses within the community and to provide the community with healthcare access conveniently and efficiently. The Medical District has established a strong partnership with the City of Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg College, Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce and Northside Hospital.
As a committee of the Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce, the Medical District shares the same values of continually encouraging and promoting community service and community outreach for our residents of Pinellas Park. To further support the mission and goals of the Pinellas Park Medical District, the healthcare education scholarship was developed to offer opportunities for students to be awarded merit-based scholarships by developing or engaging in creative health related community service initiatives that will directly or indirectly positively impact the residents of the City of Pinellas Park.
Scholarship Description:
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial aid to well-rounded, compassionate, and community-minded students pursuing a career in healthcare and plan to attend an educational institution (member of PPMD) within the City of Pinellas Park and that offer healthcare degrees or programs. Individuals considered for the scholarship award will have demonstrated active participation and contributions that directly impact the Pinellas Park community.
Selection Process:
Winners will be judged on their level of community achievements, commitment or vision for advancing the healthcare resources, opportunities or access for the residents in the City of Pinellas Park. All applicants are required to submit their professional curriculum vitae, the scholarship submission form and any supporting documentation illustrating the role they played or hope to play in achieving these goals. In addition to community service activities related to their future career goals, character, leadership, financial need and volunteer work will be considered.
An impartial selection committee consisting of one member from the Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce, Pinellas Park Medical District, City of Pinellas Park, healthcare industry/field and a member the Pinellas Park community not affiliated with any of the previously listed organizations.
*Individuals affiliated with colleges or universities in the City of Pinellas Park offering healthcare degrees or programs will not be on the selection committee.
Notification of Awards:
All applicants are notified of the competition results on July 5th. Individuals receiving the scholarship award will be required to attend a Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber breakfast member meeting on July 17th for the award presentation. In addition, the recipient of the award will be invited to attend the Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce Inaugural Gala in January to share details of their health initiative.
Maximum Amount of Award and Award Number of Awards:
There are three scholarship awards offered and are tiered based on merit and quality of applicant, accomplishments and efforts. In other words, the total amount to award will equal $5000. The scholarship committee will vet the three highest ranked applicants #1, #2, and #3 and offer a $2,500 scholarship for #1, a $1,500 scholarship for #2, and a $1,000 scholarship for #3.
Eligibility:
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must have declared a major or course of study for a healthcare degree or program offered at an education institution located in the City of Pinellas Park and the institution must be a member of the Pinellas Park Medical District
- Must be enrolled “Full-time” or “Part-time” as a student within a health program
- Must be in good academic standing at the institution currently attending or institution most previously attended
